Language and Culture as a Resource

Updated: May 3, 2023

This blog post will tackle the first guiding principle in working with Multilingual Learners (MLs). This content has been adapted for this blog from the WIDA ELD Standards Framework.

All our students, and especially our multilingual learners, come with funds of knowledge that make them unique. The asset of speaking another language, knowing how to play an instrument, working for the family business, making a family dish, or participating in cultural and religious ceremonies can come alive in our classrooms if we foster this type of community. Tapping into students’ funds of knowledge and experiences is an incredible and authentic way to bring diversity alive in your classroom.

"Multilingual learners' languages and cultures are valuable resources to be leveraged for schooling and classroom life; leveraging these assets and challenging biases help develop multilingual learners' independence and encourage their agency in learning." (WIDA 2020)
