This blog post will tackle the second guiding principle in working with Multilingual Learners (MLs). This content has been adapted for this blog from the WIDA ELD Standards Framework.
"Multilingual learners' development of multiple languages enhances their knowledge and cultural bases, intellectual capacities, and flexibility in language use." (WIDA 2020).
By creating a classroom space in which we allow students to develop multiple languages, we are creating a space for equity and access to blossom. One way to honor multiple languages in your classroom is by using an ELD Group Frame. This strategy involves a teacher asking ML students to respond orally to a prompt or to retell a story while the teacher writes responses verbatim on a chart. Students can respond in any language that they feel comfortable and recording can be done by the teacher with best-guess spelling or with student support.
